Sitting down with Variety last week, director David Gordon Green, whose work can be seen in the Halloween trilogy that just badly ended...like GOT, bad...was excited to reveal that filming for his upcoming Exorcist trilogy would begin soon, the first film set to release next year.
Along with Universal, Blumhouse and Morgan Creek, Green's planned trilogy has been hard at work already, at least with casting, nabbing Ellen Burstyn, Ann Dowd, and Leslie Odom Jr. for roles in the upcoming trilogy. Ellen Burstyn will of course be making her return to The Exorcist franchise, having only been in the 1973 film, but none of its sequels.
“We start in a couple of weeks," Green told Variety, "And we’re ready to roll up our sleeves and dive into the next great franchise. I'm honored to step into something that’s so valuable within cinema history. And knowing that there is a fanbase that is curious, aware, alert, potentially concerned to see what we’re up to. What I like is, people say, ‘Is it stressful?’ No, it’s exciting because I spent so much of my life making movies, and you’re just begging an audience to tune in, or see what’s going on, or buy tickets to the movie. With these, I’ve got stories to tell, I’ve got an imagination to express, and the way I can do that within these movies is an incredible opportunity.”
We'll see how this trilogy goes. If we're lucky, David Gordon Green won't be offered another horror franchise in the middle of this Exorcist project. I'd hate to see The Exorcist name ruined because its director got distracted. Anyways, filming for the first film in The Exorcist trilogy begins in a couple weeks.
