The official trailer for Until Dawn released about an hour ago, and being a fan of the hit 2015 video game, I have to say, I'm interested. I didn't expect the film to be a re-telling of the video game, but really, who would want that? My expectations were simple. I wanted a movie that embodied the Until Dawn setting and atmosphere, while telling a new story in the 90 minutes that feature films allow. I think we got that here.
The trailer gives us a glimpse of Clover (played by The Idea of You’s Ella Rubin), who leads a group of friends into the remote valley where her sister Melanie mysteriously disappeared a year earlier. Their investigation leads them to an abandoned visitor center, but—this being Until Dawn—things go south fast. The group is stalked by a masked killer, gruesomely murdered, and then wakes up to relive the same nightmarish evening over and over again. Each reset brings a new, even more horrifying scenario, forcing them to adapt, strategize, and, most importantly, survive until dawn. Sound familiar?
This movie is packed with talent. Ella Rubin stars as Clover, alongside Michael Cimino (Never Have I Ever), Ji-young Yoo (Expats), Odessa A’zion (Hellraiser), Belmont Cameli (Saved by the Bell), and horror veteran Peter Stormare (John Wick: Chapter 2). Fans of the original game will be thrilled to see Stormare reprise his role as the enigmatic Dr. Hill.
Behind the camera, we’ve got David F. Sandberg directing, while Gary Dauberman crafts the story. Producers include James Wan (Saw, The Conjuring) and Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity, Get Out), ensuring the movie will send shivers down your spine.
Director David F. Sandberg teased the film’s unique approach, saying, “The movie has this mechanic where things start over, and they get to try again. Every time they come back to life, it’s like they’re in a new horror genre.”
This concept honors the game’s terrifying spirit while giving fans a familiar Groundhogs Day trope that has done well in other films. Sandberg promises everything from slasher vibes to supernatural horror and psychological chills, making this a multi-layered experience for movie-goers.
Peter Stormare, a fan favorite from the game, added, “I’ve been lucky to be part of Until Dawn since the beginning, and this film is a love letter to the horror genre. It completely honors the game’s spirit.”
If the trailer is any indication, Until Dawn is more than just a video game adaptation—it’s a full-blown horror treat that can be unwrapped in just a few more months. With its killer cast, genre-savvy crew, and nods to the Hayden Panettiere/Rami Malek starring game that started it all, this is one you don’t want to miss.
Can you survive the night? Find out when Until Dawn hits theaters on April 25, 2025.
