A Horrific Recap of May 15 - 21, 2022

Writer's picture: Eric J. CullenEric J. Cullen

Well, look at that! May is almost here and gone, yet the horror news keeps coming. So much going on last week with inflation, rising costs and a wacky acting stock market, it was hard to concentrate on horror, but don't worry I managed to find some scares for you all. Let's not waste anymore time, go on and grab your fright pillow tight, as we look at some of the scares that occurred last week starting with...

May 15 - Sunday

Scream Factory is celebrating a milestone anniversary for Event Horizon, releasing a wicked cool 4K UHD steelbook edition of the film later this year.

Paul W. S. Anderson directed the space horror back in 1997, where it did not find an audience and failed at the box office. The film is now viewed in a more favorable light, having found its home in both sci-fi and horror fandoms, and now Scream Factory giving the film the respect it deserves.

Starring Laurence Fishburne, Sam Neill, Kathleen Quinlan and Joely Richardson, the 4K UHD Event Horizon will be available August 9.

May 16 - Monday

Exciting things coming from 20th Century Studios as the studios gives Predator fans a look at the upcoming sequel, Prey.

Having been in development since 2018, this Predator prequel takes place many years before Dutch and his military rescue crew touched down in Central America. Taking place 300 years ago, a Comanche warrior will fight to protect her tribe against the ugly, trophy hunters from space.

Directed by Dan Trachtenberg and written by Patrick Aison, Prey will star Amber Midthunder, Stefany Mathias, Dane DiLiegro, Stormee Kipp and Dakota Beavers. Prey is set to enjoy a theatrical release later this year in the summertime, on August 5.

May 17 - Tuesday

More Resident Evil content is coming to Dead by Daylight, and even though I don't play DBD, I am curious to see who is pulled from the RE universe and dropped in this gaming nightmare experience from Behaviour Interactive.

Back in 2021, Dead by Daylight fans were given Jill Valentine and Leon S. Kennedy as Survivors, adding to the already horror heavy cast of the game. In true RE fashion, Nemesis was added as a Killer, the indestructible bioweapon a perfect enemy for those to run away from. With a new tweet, it appears those behind DBD are ready to bring more Resident Evil fun to the game, and for the time begin, keeping info close to the chest.

More news is sure to come from Dead by Daylight, and those over at Resident Evil, for what will truly be a frightening and expansive addition to the Dead by Daylight/Resident Evil world that's being made.

There's a sale going on and if you collect steelbook editions, I have some news for you!

Going on right now over at Scream Factory, you can get your hands on some horror classics including Halloween III: Season of the Witch, Pumpkinhead, My Bloody Valentine and Motel Hell, for deals that are almost too spooky to be true.

With some awesomely, horrific artwork donning the covers of these steelbook editions, it's almost hard to believe that the savings are up to 50% on these unique and very limited collectors items. With some of these films available for less than $20, it sure would be unfortunate to miss out on this deal from those over there at Scream Factory.

The day 1 announcement from Funko's FunkoWeen celebration is here--and warning to your wallet--it's a horror icon heavy line-up this year.

Collection walls and rooms get ready, we have POP! figures coming from Leprechaun, Silence of the Lambs and Trick 'r Treat, with Warwick Davis' classic role getting two exclusive figures from Amazon and FYE.

With sack in hand and mask in place, Sam from Trick 'r Treat will be available later this year, along with Hannibal Lecter, no fava beans, and your choice of three different Leppies. Be sure to pre-order these horror icons now available from Entertainment Earth, Amazon and FYE.

May 18 - Wednesday

"NICA HAS LANDED," says Chucky creator Don Mancini, announcing the arrival of one of the best additions to the franchise, Fiona Dourif, as she peeks over the director's shoulder, in a photo posted to the Child's Play creator's Twitter.

The daughter of horror icon, Brad Dourif, Fiona made her franchise debut back in Curse of Chucky, as the wheelchair bound Nica. Since then, both Fiona and Don Mancini have molded Nica into one of the most interesting characters ever seen in the franchise, a treatment not seen since Jennifer Tilly broke out in the role of Tiffany.

As Chucky continues production on its second season, it looks like time has come for the actress to begin filming her scenes. I don't think there was any doubt in the mind's of Chucky fans, that Nica would not be returning, given how the show ended with a lot of exciting loose ends.

For those that want to know more, I suggest you keep tabs on Don Mancini's Instagram and Twitter, the Chucky creator is always posting great behind the scene pics and updates.

Day 2 of Funko's FunkoWeen celebration, honoring the halfway mark to the spookiest holiday of them all, brings a little Christmas cheer with their latest announcement of POP! figures.

Jack, Sally, Zero and more from The Nightmare Before Christmas, get the black light treatment with a set of common figures, and exclusive figures, that are perfect for those TNBC POP! collectors out there. The neon colors for each figure truly catch the eye, and will provide even more entertainment under a black light.

Not satisfied with the common TNBC figures, well act fast and get your exclusive black light variants of Jack and Zero, available for pre-order at Walmart, Hot Topic and my fav retailer, GameStop.

Mindy Kaling's Velma, a new series inspired by the classic Scooby-Doo character, is more aimed at adults, than it is children.

Velma creator Mindy Kaling gave those in attendance a first look at the adult animated HBO Max series, that will focus on the brainy mystery solver's origin story, before the times of The Mystery Machine. Kaling will provide the voice of Velma, while actor Sam Richardson lends his voice to the cast as well.

Produced by Warner Bros. Animation, Velma will premiere on HBO Max when a released date is set, which could be as early as this year.

May 19 - Thursday

A limited edition of David Selter's novelization of The Omen is on its way to print again, coming from both the author and Suntup Editions. The new print will come six full color illustrations from Juliana Kolesova, available to pre-order in three different editions.

The Omen first saw publication back in 1976, two weeks before the film's theatrical release. The film and novel would both go on to break records, the film becoming a blockbuster hit and the novel becoming a bestseller, selling more than 3 million copies. Since then, the novel has become a collector item among bookworms and horror fans.

The new publication of The Omen will come in three different editions. The Artist edition is signed by artist Juliana Kolesova. The Numbered edition is signed by both David Selter and Kolesova, and the Lettered edition, featuring a leather binding is also signed by Seltzer and Kolesova.

With their latest FunkoWeen announcement, Funko once again turns to Chucky and Tiffany for their next line of POP! figures and wearable merch, inspired by 1998's The Bride of Chucky.

In the Halfway to Hallow's Eve announcement, horror's favorite murderous duo once again get the Funko POP! treatment with new figures sold separately, or in an exclusive pair. Those lucky enough to pre-order with Hot Topic can get their hands on a 2-pack of Chucky and Tiffany, both in a trippy-looking black light variant. Entertainment Earth, will also offer an exclusive black light variant of Chucky, both exclusives available now for pre-order on each of the retailer's websites.

Walmart, not looking to be left out of the Bride of Chucky madness, will be featuring a line of merch that includes two different styles of backpacks, and a set of pins, all influenced by The Bride of Chucky.

If you thought those black light POP! figures looked cool, then I have some more colorful neon treats for you!

Chucky isn't the only horror icon getting the black light treatment. Available for pre-order now and available later in November, horror fans can get their hands on Pennywise, Elvira and Michael Myers, all in that trippy-looking black light variant. Be sure to check out Hot Topic, Entertainment Earth, Amazon and my favorite retailer of all, GameStop, for all your Funko POP! pre-order needs.

May 20 - Friday

It has been a week since Evil Dead: The Game released, and so far the game has been doing quite well, with Saber Interactive taking to Twitter to announce some good sales numbers.

Having sold over half a million copies since its release on May 13, Evil Dead: The Game has been building a strong fan base across consoles and PC. The co-op, player vs. player (PvP) gameplay appears to be giving fans just what they asked for, with a game that's not only engaging, but bloody and an authentic Evil Dead experience as well.

Boss Team Games and Lionsgate Games also share in the celebration, having developed the game alongside Saber Interactive. Featuring voice work from Evil Dead alum Bruce Campbell, and others like Dana DeLorenzo and Ray Santiago, Evil Dead: The Game looks like it is quite the experience for anyone looking to jump into another way to enjoy their favorite horror franchise created by Sam Raimi back in 1981.

A new poster for the upcoming social media/influencer horror film, Skill House has released, and it's asking viewers a simple question, "What would you do... for a view?"

Created by UK based digital artist, Luke, the unsettling poster for Skill House features a human eye, with the reflection of a hand holding a smartphone, and the sharp features of a human face blending in with the black of the pupil. Seeing as how a lot of social media is app-based, this poster is definitely a good fit for the film.

Produced by Ryan Kavanaugh and his company Proxima Studios, Skill House will be directed by Josh Stolberg, who wrote the screenplay based on an idea from Kavanaugh. Starring Bryce Hall, Skill House will tell, "A dark satire of social media and influencer culture, unflinching take on fame and what new celebrities are willing to do to attain it," according to IMDB.com.

Set to begin filming next month in June, Skill House continues its development, and those looking to keep up-to-date on Skill House should start following director Josh Stolberg, who can be found on all the popular sites like Twitter, Instagram and TikTok.

May 21 - Saturday

Rob Zombie shared two pictures on his Instagram today, in a post that should have fans of his upcoming Munsters film quite excited.

One photo from the director showed The Munsters house on the Universal Lot, taken by Rob Zombie as a teenager on the Universal Tram tour. The second picture is a selfie and shows the musician/director standing out front of The Munsters house he had built in Budapest, for a Zombie film adaptation of the 1960s television series, that is shaping up to be a very familiar and faithful Munsters film.

Starring Jeff Daniel Phillips, Sheri Moon Zombie, Daniel Roebuck and Cassandra Peterson, The Munsters is coming up on the tail end of production, with a release date that could be as early as later this year.
